| Monthly Meeting | |
| A team of umpires (11 not 2!) gathered at Sanderstead HC although we had too many goalkeepers and defenders, not enough willing midfielders and a unsurprising lack of attacking firepower. I suspect we'll be sticking to the whistle next weekend rather than comtemplating a return to playing duties. Some good discussions evolved from the midweek issue of the Player Management document and how it had related to the afternoon's activities. We will try and have a final monthly meeting for this season after Easter. Watch this space. | |
| Grade Changes | |
| The past weekend has seen two movements. Firstly a warm welcome to Chris Page who joins at Grade B3. We look forward to seeing you around the circuit. Secondly, Chris Burton-Brown has been promoted to Grade B1. Well done Chris, you now have the big step up to Grade A in front of you and we wish you all good fortune with this. S+CC | |
| Monthly Meeting | |
| This Saturday we are meeting at Sanderstead HC for our monthly assortment of hockey topics and rules conundrums. Just pop in any time during the afternoon and if you wish to stay longer SHC is running a race night starting at 7:30 Before the meeting on Saturday we will be issuing you with our paper on Player Management (control from the whistle to the use of cards) and I am sure this will get some coverage at Sanderstead. | HHUA exchange | |
| As many of you would know we enjoyed the company of 3 HHUA members on Saturday on our exchange weekend with Hampshire. I think this proved a very satisfactory experience for all concerned and one that will be repeated in the future. All 3 of our ”imports” arrived at varying times at Epsom HC on Saturday afternoon and were met by the 14 SHUA members who turned up for the monthly meeting. This was a very harmonious occasion and some very good banter was had in the bar. As far as I know all 3 of our ”exports” have safely returned over the county border and Rob Butlin even made it back to Epsom on Saturday having enhanced his hockey mileage by 150+ miles. If there are any ”stories” to recount from Hampshire I will issue a further news item later this week. Next month's meeting will probably be on 6th March in the Croydon area and we will issue more information about this nearer the time. Please mark this in your diary now. S+CC | |
| Andrew Sewell | |
| Welcome to Andrew who successfully passed his membership watching on Saturday. Andrew is from NZ and is in the UK for about 12 months so instead of wishing you many happy seasons with SHUA we will scale this down to many happy months!! I am sure you will enjoy your stay with us and make some steady progress upwards from your start at B3. S+CC | |
| A promotion... | |
| For David Heller who has gained his B3 spurs. Well done David - keep up the excellent work and good luck as you strive for your B2. Ian WItchell S+CC | |
| OLD FRIENDS | |
| Those of you who know him will be pleased to hear that I had an e-mail the other day from David G Thomson - without a pand known to some as Mr X. There is a story behind that but it is not really printable! David has now left Mendip District Council after 6 years and has decided to go it alone. He has formed his own limited company and is acting as an executive coach/mentor and I quote: This would pick up some of the coaching skills you taught me many moons ago, because apparently some of the best coaching ideas for executives come from the performance based approach used all the time in sport. He makes no specific mention of hockey and so I presume he is not involved at the moment - a pity because he has so much to offer. He was the Chairman of what used to be called SHUA's Umpiring Committee. It's always good to hear from Old Members and let's hope we will see David and Sarah in the near future. I also had a brief e-mail from Ian Moss (Mossy) the other day. Mossy is still in Scotland and has gone back to playing again. He keeps threatening to come and see us - let's hope he does. Perhaps he and Dave should communicate and come at the same time? Burty | |
| MONTHLY MEETING - FOLLOW-UP | |
| Further to the previous information about this, I am pleased to confirm that we will be having our Monthly Meeting this coming Saturday 13th February at Epsom H.C. There will be at least one Hampshire umpire present and we are hoping that the other two will join us. Please be there if you can, a good showing is essential. See you Saturday. Burty | |
| UMPIRE EXCHANGE WITH HAMPSHIRE HUA | |
| On Saturday 13th February SHUA is carrying out an exchange of umpires with Hampshire HUA. Three of our umpires, Rob Butlin, Chris Burton-Browm and Matt Dean are venturing into Hampshire where they will receive some coaching from Hampshire coaches. In return, we look forward to welcoming Shaun Gray, David Peebles and Harry Fennell into Surrey. Two of them will be coached by our coaches and the other is umpiring with Rolf Horst! It will be interesting to find out how the Hampshire and Surrey coaching methods differ and of course what is being coached. We are trying to organise a ”monthly get together” after their games, probably at Epsom HC, but this is as yet undecided so watch this space. We hope as many of you as possible will come along after your games and show the Hampshire boys some good old Surrey hospitality! | |

| Tim Baggett | |
| To most of us he was simply known as T Bag and many of the older brigade in SHUA will have known him as a player at Purley Walcountians. Prior to that Tbag played at a number of other Surrey clubs and was a member, before their merger, at both Purley and Old Walcountians. He was also very well known on the Mixed Hockey circuit and in the latter part of his playing career he represented East Grinstead. I am very sorry to have to advise that T Bag lost the fight against his long term illness on 5th January. Details of the funeral arrangements will be posted here as soon as they are known. I knew T Bag for more than 30 years as a friend but I will always remember him as a hockey ”mercenary” - have stick will travel, no game being too far or too difficult for him to play in. T Bag was a skilful but robust player who brought much to our game and was always easy for an umpire to talk to in the bar after the game - a trait much lacking today. T Bag played the game hard but fair and talked about it in a similar fashion afterwards. His bonhomie and enthusiasm will be much missed by players and umpires. Ian Witchell | |
| Ten Pin Bowling? | |
| The next Umpires’ Social will be at the Ten-pin Bowling at Tolworth. I am aiming for a 19:30 start on Friday 22nd January. Can you please e-mail me by Friday 8th January at Robert.Butlin@talktalk.net if you would like to come along, and if so whether you intend to bring your partner. I need to know how many lanes I need to book 2 weeks before the day. I'm sure this type of event will bring SHUA's competitive nature to the fore! Rob Butlin ... More | |
| Old-Midwhitgiftian / Midwives | |
| Old-Midwhitgiftian HC and the mixed team that used to play there, often known as Midwives, are no longer part of the same organisation. There is currently no mixed team associated with OMWHC. | |
| SURREY CUP 2009/10 – QUARTER-FINAL DRAW The draw for the quarter-finals was carried out at Purley Walcountians on Saturday 12th December. The draw was made by Gary Stent, Chief Umpire Coach of SCHUA. The draw is: Richmond v. Surbiton 2 Reigate Priory v. Epsom Merton v. L.Wayfarers Spencer v. Purley Walcountians. I would like to get these 4 games completed as quickly as possible. I wonder if there is any chance of playing before the league restart on Saturday 16th January? Perhaps instead of any friendlies on 9th January? I urge the home teams to contact their opposition, fix a date and let me know when you are going to play. I remind you that for a Saturday game you should apply to me for umpires but if you are going to play on a Sunday, you should contact Robert Butlin on robert.butlin@talktalk.net or robert.butlin@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk I am, as ever, looking for a ground at which we could play the finals. Any offers please? Finally, would the teams involved in these quarter-finals please confirm that they have received this e-mail. Thank you. Burty | |

| Umpire Panels | |
| I am sure we are all aware of the Grading List that has recently been re-titled Umpire Panels. Between our Active Umpires there is a pecking order of success and over the last two years the S+CC has endeavoured to make this a much more competitive environment by taking away the necessity, on the whole, of requiring two successful assessments to move within the grades. This element of ”internal” competition is seen as a must so that umpires can have realistic goals they can target to either maintain or improve their standing within the Umpire Panels. Whilst we have not changed the Umpire Panel list itself we have now changed the ”rules” that we work to in compiling it. The S+CC sets these ”rules” that up until last April (2009) were complicated by the varying league structures to which we were asked to appoint umpires. Of course, we have now witnessed the amalgamation of the South League and the Open League into one coherent hierarchy of our mens hockey programme. This enables us to simplify our Umpire Panel criteria that is now revised and published in the Handbook Section of this site. S+CC | |
| Mini Hockey Rules 2009 Statement | |
| The Rules of Mini Hockey are issued by England Hockey. They are reviewed every two years so as to be in accordance with the revised FIH Rules of Hockey (where appropriate). England Hockey has not previously adapted or adopted any mandatory experiments from the 11 a-side game into Mini Hockey; however, this year, due to the significant impact of the new free hit mandatory experiment England Hockey has reviewed its position and can confirm that the new Rules of Mini Hockey 2009-10 will include an adapted version of the self-pass at free hits and re-starts. These new Rules of Mini Hockey 2009-10 shall apply to all mini hockey players and officials. The implementation date is for all mini hockey competitions, inclusive of schools and clubs championships, is 1 November 2009. Any club, school, association or organisation wishing to implement prior to 1 November is free to do so. Availability of Rules Mini Hockey Rules 2009-10 books are available from England Hockey. Please use the order form available on the England Hockey website at www.englandhockey.co.uk/umpiring. The Rules will also be available to read or download as a PDF from the website by the end of the week commencing 19 October 2009. Changes to Rules The mandatory experimental rule relating to the self pass at a free hit/re-start (as in 11-a-side hockey) has been adapted and incorporated into the mini hockey game. | |
| New rules | |
| With particular reference to the self pass the EHA has issued a very useful guide to the 2009 differences that may influence our umpiring techniques and practices. The document is available in the downloads section of this website. You are urged to read this document and keep referring back to it as you continue your umpiring through this season. Please remember that it is not only the new rules that need to be understood and acted upon but also the old (but still current!) ones as well! This is made absolutely clear in the EHA document. Coaches and Assessors will be pleased to discuss any aspects of ANY of the rules of the game with you during watchings this season. Please take advantage of their services as they are there to help you succeed. S+CC 15/09/09 |
