| 19th Nov 08 | A hearty welcome to |
| Bruce Halley (player/umpire from Spencer) who has joined SHUA. Bruce obtained his umpiring qualifications in South Africa where he held the equivalent of a NPUA badge. We have placed Bruce in Grade B1 but in all truth do not expect him to linger there for very long. When we can fit in sutiable games around Bruce's playing commitments a rapid rise to Grade A is predicted. Ian Witchell Selection + Coaching Committee | |
| 17th Nov 08 | A NEW AWARD FOR SHUA – THE ROGER LOVELAND TROPHY |
| Many of our members will not know who Roger Loveland was but those as long in the tooth as me most certainly will! When I started umpiring back in the 1970’s, Roger, along with his very noisy brother Tony, was playing for the Old Cranleighans 1st X1 and indeed skippered their side for many years. He was always the perfect gentleman and his knowledge of the game was extensive. On the pitch he played hard but fair but in the bar he was frequently the first person to buy the umpires a beer and engage them in friendly banter. Roger continued to play, latterly in the Vets, but was still always delighted to welcome any SHUA members as old as he was! Very sadly Roger died recently very prematurely. He will be missed greatly in hockey circles. In memory of Roger, the OCHC committee has most generously offered an annual award to SHUA as they felt that Roger’s affinity with the umpires was so much a part of his hockey. We are absolutely thrilled by this and our Council has agreed that the Roger Loveland Trophy, to be presented annually at our AGM, should be awarded to the SHUA umpire who has made the most improvement during the season. Our sincerest thanks go to the OCHC and as a Vice-President of their club, I hope that the next time those who knew Roger visit the club, they will raise a glass in his memory. | |

| 1st Oct 08 | MEMBERS MEETING - THURSDAY 16th OCTOBER 2008 |
Ladies and Gents, I am delighted to be able to confirm that on Thursday 16th October at Epsom H.C. Nigel Lander has agreed once again to come and speak to our members. The meeting will start at 8.00 p.m. and there will be snacks available mainly for those coming straight from work. The clubhouse should be open from about 7.00 p.m. SHUA are aware that something pretty drastic needs to be done to attract new umpires to the circuit. One reason given by players for not umpiring is that they do not wish to take the flak that they themselves dole out liberally! We feel that perhaps the time has come to do something about this perception by prospective umpires. There has been much talk of a ”zero tolerance” policy and Nigel has agreed to cover this. However, he wishes to make his talk a bit broader than that and I quote him: “As I travel across the Southern Counties, I see too many games where it is obvious that the umpires have not enjoyed themselves. This increases the possibility that they will give up and makes recruiting new umpires very difficult and the job of Appointments Secretaries almost impossible.” Nigel seeks to explore what we can do to make our lives easier. Pro-active management at the elite level improves players skills and behaviour. He will host this forum on behalf of the county to look at this message and to discuss what we can take away to make our Saturday umpiring that much more enjoyable. My mouth is watering already so I look forward to seeing a bumper turnout. Burty | |
| 28th Sep 08 | Red Cards and MMOs |
| England Hockey have revised their Code of Ethics and Behaviour, which includes the Red Card offences. There is a new Red Card Form, which is differenct from the last issue (only 3 categories of offence rather than 7). This new form should be used if you issue a Red Card during the course of the game. For a similar offence that is committed before or after the game, the same form is to be used but the box indicating Match Day Misconduct must be ticked. In both cases you must contact our Disciplinary Officer - David Griffiths within 24 hours. David will be happy to guide you through the form and the process. These forms are available for download from the England Hockey website www.Englandhockey.co.uk by following the links to Equity, Ethics and Behaviour and then to the Code of Ethics section where all the information is available.
